Alvaro Lopez Rodriguez is an architect, researcher, and Associate Professor (Teaching) at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, where he leads innovation at the intersection of robotics, 3D printing, and mixed reality. In October 2025, he completed his PhD at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid with the thesis "Digital Interactions: Architecture for the Augmented Era," which redefines the synergy between human craftsmanship and digital automation. He also holds a Master of Architecture with Distinction from The Bartlett and a Master’s in Architecture from the European University of Madrid.



Complementing his academic tenure, Alvaro is a highly sought-after Digital Manufacturing Consultant. He has collaborated with pioneering international firms, including Nagami, Ensamble Studio, and DBT ETH Zurich, to implement advanced robotic fabrication and augmented reality workflows in large-scale architectural projects. His expertise bridges the gap between computational design and physical construction, focusing on "Augmented Craftsmanship" to empower local labour through intuitive technological tools.

DESCRIPTION
Digital Grotesque II is a monumental 3.5-meter-high, seven-ton 3D-printed sandstone grotto that redefines the boundary between human intuition and machine intelligence. Now a part of the permanent collection at the Centre Pompidou, this installation represents a profound shift in architectural history: the transition of the computer from a passive drafting tool to an autonomous generative partner.

The project moves beyond the "human-led" constraints of its predecessor. Here, the computational system was endowed with evaluative autonomy, learning to optimise its own designs. Because a grotto lacks traditional functional requirements such as load-bearing efficiency or material minimisation, the team challenged the AI to optimise for "soft criteria"—human emotional responses such as awe, curiosity, and bewilderment. By quantifying geometric properties such as experience-ability (visual shifts) and depth-complexity (topological density), the system generated millions of intricate, recursive branches that are physically undrawable by human hands.

In this new paradigm, the architect’s role evolves into that of a curator and conductor. While the machine provides a generative capacity that far exceeds individual imagination, the human provides the aesthetic judgment and cultural context. The resulting structure—a complex "digital seed" grown into 3D-printed sandstone—inhabits a surreal space between the natural and the synthetic. It is a testament to a future where design is no longer about standardisation, but about unlocking limitless formal languages through a partnership of biological and digital intelligence.
